The THROWN team sent some questions about my practice, here you can find a snippet of my artistic process.
Where did your relationship with art begin?
Art has been part of my life since I was born. I grew up with a creative mother who was always painting and taking me and my brother to museums and making time to appreciate architecture and the importance of living in a house that fulfils a sense of beauty and personal experiences.
Do you plan each piece in advance or do they develop intuitively?
I usually start from a sketch and start iterating the shape to see where are the limits where I can make it function with the clay. After that, I started creating multiple scale models with clay to see the volume and see how it could be refined to its final shape. My approach is more intuitive I have developed a connection with the clay material and have learnt how to explore its limits.
How important is tactility to your work?
Tactility is one of my main drivers when creating, and is a key element when constructing a piece. Through touch, I identify the state of the clay and envision how the piece can grow in an effective way. It's challenging to work with a material that can be fragile and can change shape with multiple factors like the temperature of the room so it's to procure multiple factors that are not visible through the eye.
Can you tell us more about the work featured in our Winter Exhibition?
The collection is about materialising the acts of touch through abstract forms. You can find more information about Beacons here
